Kyrgyzstan, officially known as the Kyrgyz Republic. Kyrgyzstan is a beautiful landlocked country in the eastern part of Central Asia. The Kyrgyz Republic is a landlocked country, bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, China to the southeast, and Tajikistan to the west. The country is known as ‘Switzerland of Asia’ for its natural beauty and diverse traditions.

Until the nineteenth century the country was ruled by different dynasties and after independence was invaded by different foreigners. Kyrgyzstan became part of the Russian Empire in the late 19th century. In 1924, it became an autonomous region of the Soviet Union. In 1936, it was granted the status of a Soviet republic. In August 1991, it emerged as an independent nation and gradually a democratic government was established. In 1993, a new constitution was passed.

The country of about 2 lakh square kilometers has a population of about 7 million. 63% of the total population is Muslim. The official dialects of Kyrgyzstan are Kyrgyz (national) and Russian (official). The Kyrgyz are a Muslim Turkish nation. They make up the majority of Kyrgyzstan’s population. Uzbeks and Russians are significant minorities here. The currency of the country is called – Som (KGS). The country is divided into seven provinces, consisting of several districts and governed by a governor. The city of Bishkek is the capital and largest city of the country. Bishkek covers a total area of about 492 square miles. The second largest city is Osh. The country plays an important role in trade through the Silk Route.
